Self-portraits

Portfolio

A self-portrait is as natural a thing for an artist as swimming is for a fish. And Aria Luna has been swimming in this sea for a while. What’s fascinating is to see her vertiginous growth as an artist in these few short years. The most recent portrait is at the top, descending back in time as you scroll down.

Self-portrait à Modigliani

2019
Pastels on paper
12 x 9 in
30.5 x 22.9 cm

This is Aria Luna’s most striking self-portrait to date. She was in a class studying the art of Modigliani. We dare say the old master would give this a big thumbs up.

Self-portrait à Picasso #2

2018
Acrylic markers on canvas paper
12 x 9 in
30.5 x 22.9 cm

Another Picasso-style self-portrait; this one is more Picasso-y than the first though (remember you’re supposed to be reading this page from the bottom up!)

It was created right after “Mama” (see below).

“Mama”

2018
Acrylic markers on canvas paper
12 x 9 in
30.5 x 22.9 cm

This is mama the way Picasso would have painted her, in Aria’s perspective. Or, the way Aria would have painted her had she been incarnated as Picasso. Or simply Aria’s own Picasso-style portrait of mama. Whatever the case, mama loves it.

Self-portrait à Picasso #1

2018
Acrylic on cardboard
10 x 10 in
25.4 x 25.4 cm

One of our favorite self-portraits of Aria Luna. She created this in the space of a single class about Picasso’s art.

Self-portrait in school

2017
Color pencil on paper over cardboard
10.6 x 7.9 in
27 x 20 cm

This self-portrait was produced in school. Lots of cardboard lying around just waiting to be turned into art.

Note the beginnings of a study on the shape of the human nose.

Angry/Sad

2016
Color pencil on a notebook
9.75 x 7.5 in
24.8 x 19.1 cm

An earlier self-portrait, this one was the result of a class inquiry into the emotional states of anger and sadness. Yes, they do this kind of work in first grade. What a difference a generation makes.

2016
Pen and color pencil on paper
12 x 8.5 in
30.5 x 21.6 cm

Ah, the thrill of victory! Especially when you beat your Dad at chess and you’re just six years old.

Self-portrait with animalitos

2016
Markers on paper
9 x 6 in
22.9 x 15.2 cm

Aria’s third self-portrait from her kindergarten years. Interestingly, here she depicts the exact colors and style of a nightgown she had back then.

Aria Luna from California

2016
Pen and markers on paper
8.5 x 11 in
21.6 x 27.9 cm

Just in case you didn’t know where Aria Luna is from.

Me Snapping Fingers

2015
Markers on paper
8.5 x 11 in
21.6 x 27.9 cm

This is one of Aria Luna’s very first self-portraits. It was early November, 2015. Mama came to pick her up from her kindergarten classroom, and was approached by another mom. The mother was holding this artwork, her eyes wide open. “Your daughter’s brilliant,” she said.
